Our National Symbol
The founders of the United States, wanted a bird to symbolize our new Country’s freedom, strength and Power. They chose a “bird of prey” that only resides in North America, the American Eagle.
Eagles have been symbols of Power, Honor, death and the journey of souls, since before Roman Emperor Augustus. Eagles played the role of soul bearers for many ancient cultures. Aztecs likened the Eagle with the sun. Most Native American Indian Peoples attach special significance to the Eagle and its feathers.
Many logo’s and symbols of the American Indian are images of Eagles.
To be given an Eagle feather was one of the highest honors that could be awarded. The American Indian traditions honored both the Bald Eagle and the Golden Eagles (and their feathers). They respected the honesty, majesty, courage, truth, strength, wisdom, power and freedom. They believed they have a special connection to God.
Eagle feathers were awarded to Indian braves, warriors and Chieftains for their extreme act’s of bravery and were earned one at a time. They were kept in a special place, shown respect and kept clean and protected.
Many Indians would rather part with their horses, tepee or personal items rather than lose his Eagle feathers……
Is it any wonder our Founding Fathers came to the same conclusion that the American Eagle was to serve as a living symbol of the pride of many Americans?
